Sailor Jim’s Seafood Makes Waves with Launch and Acquisition of 260+ Acres of Oyster Farms

Carrollton, VA – Sailor Jim’s Seafood LLC, a family-owned and minority-owned business based in Virginia, is thrilled to announce its official launch and a major first milestone: the acquisition of 12 oyster farms spanning over 260 acres of prime planting grounds in Southeast Virginia. This exciting step forward cements the company’s mission to bring fresh, sustainable, and delicious seafood to tables across the nation. The company is especially excited to announce this news in November, which is Virginia Oyster Month!

The acquisition, approved by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, marks a historic transition of oyster planting ground leases previously held for generations by the Adams Oyster Company (owned by the Adams and Bagnell families), pioneers in Virginia’s oyster farming industry. Through the purchase process, Sailor Jim’s Seafood worked closely with these families to preserve and build on their legacy.

“We are honored to acquire our first oyster farms and to carry forward a tradition rooted in the Chesapeake Bay,” said Christopher Andrews, President and majority owner of Sailor Jim’s Seafood. “This acquisition represents more than a business opportunity; it’s a commitment to sustainability, quality, and the community. We look forward to creating jobs, cultivating top-tier oysters, and contributing to the preservation of our waterways for future generations.”

Sailor Jim’s Seafood will use its newly acquired oyster farms—located in the Chesapeake Bay, Nansemond River, Battens Bay, Chuckatuck Creek, Cooper Creek, and the James River—for a blend of aquaculture, farming, and research initiatives focused on oyster health and waterway conservation. The business brings a fresh perspective to Virginia’s seafood industry as one of the few Black-owned aquaculture companies in the East Coast.

Sailor Jim’s Seafood is dedicated to delivering premium seafood products, including its flagship offerings, Virginia Oysters and Virginia Blue Crab. With its launch, Sailor Jim’s Seafood invites seafood lovers to experience the richness of Virginia’s coastal waters. From sustainability practices to community investment, every aspect of the business reflects a deep respect for the Chesapeake Bay and its resources.
